Welcome to Camp Sangamon! We’re located on a small lake in the hills outside of Rutland, Vermont. Sangamon was founded in 1922, and we’ve based our many years of success on one fundamental philosophical difference from other camps. While most camps operate on the premise that adults should generally make decisions for children, we believe in the opposite premise - that camp is a perfect setting to give children the chance to make their own decisions. Camp Killooleet is nestled into a beautiful corner of the Green Mountain National Forest in Hancock, Vermont. For over 60 years it has been owned and run by the Seeger family, educators who know and listen to children. Killooleet has remained small and personal. Every summer a strong, supportive community is built. 100 boys and girls love the fact that they be themselves, and can choose their activities each day. It is a "traditional camp" that goes its own way in a non-traditional manner. We have the performing and visual arts as well as team and individual sports, bicycles, hikes and overnight trips. History
The Vermont region was explored and claimed for France by Samuel de Champlain in 1609, and the first French settlement was established at Fort Ste. Anne in 1666. The first English settlers moved into the area in 1724 and built Fort Dummer on the site of present-day Brattleboro. England gained control of the area in 1763 after the French and Indian Wars. First organized to drive settlers from New York out of Vermont, the Green Mountain Boys, led by Ethan Allen, won fame by capturing Fort Ticonderoga from the British on May 10, 1775, in the early days of the Revolutionary War. In 1777 Vermont adopted its first constitution, abolishing slavery and providing for universal male suffrage without property qualifications.
